What is the minimum word count for IELTS Writing?
Task 1 needs at least 150 words and Task 2 needs at least 250 words. This is the same in IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training.
How does this tool count words?
It counts each group of characters between spaces as one word. Our Writing practice editor uses the same rule, so the number you see here matches the number there.
Does it match the word count in IELTS on computer?
We cannot promise that. The computer test shows an on-screen word count, but IELTS does not publish how it counts numbers, symbols, hyphenated words or contractions.
What happens if I write fewer words than the minimum?
There is no direct penalty, but your score may suffer. IELTS says a short answer may not show enough evidence of the language needed for higher bands.
Is there a maximum word count?
No. IELTS says you will not be penalised for writing more than the minimum. But a long answer takes time, and you may have none left to check your work.
