IELTS Writing Task 2 topic generator

Get a Task 2 essay question by type and theme, then write against a 40-minute timer, the time suggested for Task 2.

These are original practice questions written in the style of the test, not questions from an exam.

Pick a question type and theme if you like, then press New question. There are 60 original practice questions.

This page does not save or grade anything. Write on paper or in any editor, then check your length with the IELTS word counter.

Want a band score? Writing practice grades a Task 2 essay, but the app chooses its own question, so it will not be this one. Free accounts get 5 graded practices. Pro, our paid plan, lets you choose the question type.

Frequently asked questions

How does the Task 2 topic generator work?

Choose a question type and a theme, or leave both on All, then press New question. Press Start 40-minute timer when you begin to plan, and aim for at least 250 words before time is up.

Are these real IELTS questions?

No, they are original practice questions. Our team wrote all 60 of them in the style of the test, using the usual wording for each question type. They are not taken from any exam, website or book.

Which question types can I practise?

There are five: Opinion (agree or disagree), Discuss both views, Advantages and disadvantages, Problem and solution, Two-part question. Each type asks for a different shape of essay, so the tool shows a short tip for the type you get.

Can I get my essay on this question graded?

Not on this page: it does not save or grade anything. Writing practice grades Task 2 essays, but the app chooses its own question there, not the one shown here. Free accounts get 5 graded practices, and Pro, our paid plan, lets you choose the question type.
