6.5
How the overall band works
Add your four bands together and divide by four. Then round the average to the nearest half band. There is one rule worth remembering: if the average ends in .25, it rounds up to the next half band; if it ends in .75, it rounds up to the next whole band.
| Four skills | Average | Overall |
|---|---|---|
| 6.5, 6.5, 5.0, 7.0 | 6.25 | 6.5 |
| 6.5, 6.5, 5.5, 6.0 | 6.125 | 6.0 |
| 4.0, 3.5, 4.0, 4.0 | 3.875 | 4.0 |

Frequently asked questions
How is the overall IELTS band score calculated?
Your four skill bands (Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking) are added together and divided by four. That average is then rounded to the nearest half band, with one special rule: an average ending in .25 rounds up to the next half band, and one ending in .75 rounds up to the next whole band.
What if my average ends in .25 or .75?
These round up. For example, an average of 6.25 becomes 6.5, and an average of 6.75 becomes 7.0. An average of 6.125 rounds to the nearest half (6.0), and 3.875 rounds to 4.0.
Can I get half marks in the overall band?
Yes. The overall band, like each skill band, is reported in whole and half bands — for example 6.0, 6.5 or 7.0. You never receive a quarter band such as 6.25 as your final score.
Is this the official IELTS calculation?
The rounding rule used here is the official one published by IELTS. This tool is an independent study aid and is not affiliated with the IELTS partners.
