How to Describe a Graph or Chart in Writing Task 1
Updated 3 December 2025 · 2 min read · ieltspractice.app
Start with an overview. Write one or two sentences that say the main trend or biggest difference. Do this before any numbers. Then group the data, choose two or three key features, and report them with figures. Aim for about 150 words and never give your opinion.
Step 1: Write the overview first
The overview is the most important part. It tells the examiner the big picture in one or two sentences. For example: sales went up overall, or one group was always the highest.
You do not need numbers here. Just say what stands out. A clear overview can lift your score, so write it early and make it easy to find.
Step 2: Group the data
Do not describe every single number. Instead, put similar things together. You might group the highest and lowest, the things that rise and the things that fall, or the start and the end.
Grouping keeps your writing tidy and helps you choose what to include. It also stops you from listing data with no clear order.
Step 3: Choose key features and add figures
Pick only two or three main features. For each one, give a number, a year, or a percentage to support it. This shows you can read the chart correctly.
Use words like rose, fell, peaked, stayed steady, and reached. Compare where you can, for example by saying twice as high or far lower than.
Step 4: Plan your structure and word count
A simple plan works best: one short introduction, one overview, then two body paragraphs of details. This is easy to follow and easy to mark.
Aim for about 150 words. Writing far fewer can lose marks, and writing far more can waste time you need for Task 2.
Common mistakes to avoid
Do not give opinions or reasons. Task 1 asks you to report data, not to explain why it happened or say if it is good.
Do not copy the question word for word. Change a few words in your introduction so it sounds like your own.

Frequently asked questions
How many words should I write?
Aim for about 150 words. Going a little over is fine, but very short answers lose marks.
Should I include my opinion?
No. Task 1 is a report. Just describe what the graph or chart shows, with no opinions.
Do I need to describe every number?
No. Group the data and choose two or three key features. Listing every number is not needed.
Where should the overview go?
Put it near the start, right after a short introduction sentence, so the examiner finds it easily.
