Typical conversion. Actual boundaries vary by about a mark between test versions. The official anchor marks are roughly 16 for band 5, 23 for band 6, 30 for band 7 and 35 for band 8.
Frequently asked questions
How many correct answers do I need for band 7 in Listening?
On the typical scale you need about 30 out of 40 correct for band 7, around 35 for band 8, and 39–40 for band 9. Exact boundaries move by a mark or so between test versions.
Is the Listening scale the same for Academic and General Training?
Yes. IELTS Listening uses one conversion table for both Academic and General Training candidates.
Are these band boundaries exact?
No. The IELTS partners do not publish a fixed table, and the marks needed shift slightly from one test version to another. Use this as a close estimate, not a guarantee.
