Matching information questions ask you to find which paragraph contains a specific piece of information — a fact, an example, a reason or a comparison. Many learners find these hard because the questions do not follow the order of the passage. With the right scanning method, though, they become much more manageable. Here is how.
What this question type asks
You are given several statements and a passage divided into paragraphs. For each statement, you decide which paragraph contains that information.
Unlike matching headings, you are looking for a specific detail, not the main idea. And unlike most question types, these do not follow the order of the text, so answers can come from anywhere.
Why they feel difficult
Because the questions jump around the passage, you cannot simply work top to bottom. A paragraph may also contain the answer to more than one question, or none at all.
The information is usually paraphrased, so you are matching meaning, not matching words. Spotting the idea in different wording is the real skill here.
A reliable method
Read the statement and pick out the key idea. Then scan the paragraphs for that idea expressed in any words, not just the exact ones from the question.
When you find a paragraph that clearly contains the information, note its letter and move on. Do not read every word; scan for the specific detail.
Watch the traps
A paragraph may mention the same topic without containing the specific information asked for. Make sure the detail truly matches, not just the general subject.
Do not be fooled by matching words. The correct paragraph is the one with the same meaning, even if it uses completely different vocabulary.
A smart time-saving tip
Do the other question types for that passage first, because they follow the order of the text and help you learn where things are. By the time you reach matching information, you already know the passage.
If one statement is hard to place, leave it and come back. Once the easy ones are done, fewer paragraphs remain to check.
