IELTS Writing Task 2 — Family and Society: a Band 9 sample answer

As populations age across much of the world, societies face a pressing question: who should shoulder the responsibility of caring for the elderly? While some maintain that adult children ought to look after their ageing parents at home, others believe state-run care homes are better suited to the task. In my view, although family care offers irreplaceable emotional warmth, the two approaches work best in combination.

Those who favour home care argue that nobody understands an elderly relative better than their own family. Living alongside children and grandchildren can stave off the loneliness that so often blights old age, and it allows seniors to remain woven into the fabric of daily life. In many cultures, moreover, caring for one's parents is regarded as a sacred duty, a way of repaying the sacrifices they once made. For these families, sending a relative away would feel like a betrayal of deeply held values.

On the other hand, advocates of state care point to a hard reality: most working adults simply lack the time, training and medical knowledge that frail seniors require. A professional facility can provide round-the-clock supervision, physiotherapy and emergency care that an exhausted son or daughter cannot. Furthermore, relieving relatives of this burden can actually preserve the relationship, sparing it from the resentment that constant caregiving sometimes breeds.

In conclusion, while I deeply value the affection that only a family can offer, I believe the wisest path lies in blending both models. The state should fund accessible support and respite services, enabling families to keep their loved ones close without sacrificing their own wellbeing.
