Describe a Film You Watched — Cue Card

Film cards fail in one predictable way: candidates retell the entire plot and run out of time before saying anything about themselves. The plot is not the answer — your reaction is. Summarise the film in one sentence, then spend your time on what it did to you.
The cue card
Describe a film you watched that you enjoyed. You should say: what the film was, when and where you watched it, what it was about, and explain why you enjoyed it.
One minute to prepare, two minutes to speak. Rule of thumb: plot gets two sentences maximum. Everything else is your reaction.
A Band 9 sample answer
A film I watched recently and genuinely loved is a small independent film about a retired teacher who learns to use a smartphone to video-call his granddaughter abroad. That is the whole plot — an old man, a phone, and time zones.
I watched it at home on a rainy Sunday, alone, expecting background noise while I cooked. Within ten minutes I had stopped cooking completely. There is a scene where he practises saying hello to the phone camera, over and over, like an actor rehearsing — and I suddenly realised I was watching my own grandfather, who used to write me letters because he could not work email.
Why did I enjoy it? Because it took something my generation treats as trivial — a video call — and showed what it costs someone who grew up with letters. I called my grandfather that evening. Any film that changes what you do after the credits is a good film in my book.
Why this answer works
Plot discipline: the whole film is summarised in one sentence ('an old man, a phone, and time zones'). That leaves ninety seconds for reaction, which is where the marks are.
The answer connects the film to the speaker's life and ends with an action ('I called my grandfather'). Film-plus-consequence is the same winning formula as conversation cards.
Part 3 follow-up questions
Expect: Is cinema dying because of streaming? Do films influence young people's behaviour? Should films from your country be protected from foreign competition?
Pick a side and defend it with a reason and an example — streaming answers are everywhere, so make yours specific.
Useful language for this topic
For summarising: it follows, it is set in, the whole plot in one sentence is, without spoiling anything.
For reaction: it stayed with me, I did not expect to, it caught me off guard, it made me think about. React, do not retell.

Frequently asked questions
Can I describe a famous blockbuster?
Yes, but famous films invite plot retelling. If you pick one, summarise ruthlessly and get to your personal reaction fast.
What if I cannot remember the film's title or actors?
Say so naturally — 'the title escapes me, but it was about...' — and continue. Content and fluency score, memory does not.
Is a documentary or series acceptable?
A documentary is fine. For a series, focus on one episode or the show as a whole; do not attempt a season plot summary.
