New Zealand sets one of the clearest IELTS rules of any country: for its skilled residence visas, the principal applicant needs an overall band of 6.5, and partners or children aged 16+ need 5.0. Either IELTS Academic or General Training is accepted, and the result must be no more than two years old. Here is how the rules work, taken from Immigration New Zealand's official pages.

Skilled residence visas: minimum test scores

Skilled residence: the 6.5 rule

New Zealand's skilled residence pathways — including the Skilled Migrant Category and the Green List 'Straight to Residence' and 'Work to Residence' visas — all share the same English floor: an overall IELTS band of 6.5 for the person making the application.

Unlike Australia or Canada, New Zealand asks for a single overall score rather than separate bands per skill, and it accepts either IELTS module. That makes the target simple: one overall 6.5 result, less than two years old.

Partners and dependent children aged 16 or older need only an overall 5.0 — and if they fall short, you can pre-purchase English lessons for them in New Zealand instead of retaking the test. Principal applicants cannot use the lessons option; the 6.5 is firm.

Who can skip the test

You may not need IELTS at all if you are a citizen of Canada, Ireland, the United Kingdom or the United States and have spent at least five years working or studying in one of those countries, Australia or New Zealand.

A bachelor's degree comparable to a New Zealand level-7 qualification (at least two years of study in one of those countries) or a postgraduate qualification (at least one year) can also satisfy the requirement. Immigration New Zealand may ask for an International Qualification Assessment to confirm comparability.

Studying in New Zealand

For student visas, Immigration New Zealand does not set one national IELTS number. Each university or institute sets its own English requirement for admission — most degree programmes ask for IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall, sometimes with a minimum per skill.

Check the exact figure on your programme's page before booking the test, and remember the result should be recent: providers generally expect a test taken within the last two years.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need IELTS Academic or General Training for New Zealand?

For skilled residence visas, Immigration New Zealand accepts either module — the requirement is an overall band of 6.5 in the Academic or General test. For university admission you will usually need IELTS Academic.

What is the minimum IELTS score for New Zealand immigration?

For the main applicant on a skilled residence visa: an overall band of 6.5. Partners and dependent children aged 16+ need an overall 5.0, or you can pre-purchase English lessons for them instead.

Can I retake just one skill?

Yes. Immigration New Zealand accepts IELTS One Skill Retake, so a single weak skill does not force a full re-sit.

How old can my IELTS result be?

No more than 2 years old at the time you apply, and the test must have been taken in person at a test centre.

Is there a fixed IELTS score for a New Zealand student visa?

No national figure — the education provider sets the English requirement for admission, commonly IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall for degree programmes.
