For Canadian immigration, your IELTS result is converted into a Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) level. The score you need depends on the programme — Express Entry has a clear minimum, while study permits are mostly set by the school you apply to. Here is what each pathway asks for, taken from official Government of Canada pages.

IELTS (General Training) to CLB level

Express Entry uses this official IRCC table. Note that each skill maps differently — band 8.0 in Listening and band 7.0 in Reading both count as CLB 9.

Express Entry: the minimum and the sweet spot

Express Entry is Canada’s main skilled-immigration system. You must take IELTS General Training (not Academic), and your scores become CLB levels.

The Federal Skilled Worker Program has a floor of CLB 7 in every skill — that is IELTS 6.0 in Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. Below that you are not eligible, so 6.0 across the board is the number to aim for first.

Language is also worth a lot of ranking points. Points keep rising up to CLB 9 (Listening 8.0, Reading 7.0, Writing 7.0, Speaking 7.0), so reaching CLB 9 is the practical sweet spot for a competitive profile. Pushing one skill higher can lift your overall ranking more than you might expect.

Studying in Canada

For a study permit, the Government of Canada does not set one fixed IELTS number. Instead, the college or university decides what English level it wants for admission, and you prove it to them.

In practice many programmes ask for around IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall, but this is the school’s rule, not an immigration rule — always check your exact programme. Most universities want IELTS Academic for admission, even though Canada’s immigration pathways use General Training.

One thing to plan ahead for: after you graduate, the Post-Graduation Work Permit now has its own language requirement — CLB 7 for university bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral graduates (CLB 5 for college programmes). It is worth keeping that target in mind from the start.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need IELTS Academic or General Training for Canada?

For immigration through Express Entry you must take IELTS General Training. For university admission you will usually need IELTS Academic. Many people heading to study and then stay end up taking both at different stages.

What is the minimum IELTS score for Express Entry?

The Federal Skilled Worker Program requires CLB 7, which is IELTS 6.0 in each of the four skills. Other Express Entry programmes can be lower (CLB 5 for some).

What IELTS score gives the most points?

Language points climb up to CLB 9 — Listening 8.0, Reading 7.0, Writing 7.0 and Speaking 7.0. Reaching CLB 9 is the usual target for a strong Express Entry profile.

Does the Student Direct Stream still exist?

No. The SDS closed on 8 November 2024. Study-permit applications now go through the regular stream, and the old SDS language rule no longer applies.

Is there a fixed IELTS score required to study in Canada?

Not from the government. Your college or university sets the English requirement for admission — commonly around IELTS Academic 6.0 to 6.5 overall — so check the exact figure for your programme.
