IELTS for studying in the USA (F-1 student visa)
Updated 24 June 2026

The United States is the most popular country in the world for international students — and one of the most misunderstood when it comes to English tests. The good news for you: there is no single “US visa IELTS score”. The F-1 student visa itself does not set an IELTS minimum. Instead, the university you apply to decides what English level it wants, and that is the number you actually need to hit. Here is how it works, the scores schools usually ask for, and what to do if you are not there yet.
These are common admission minimums set by each university, not a US government rule. Your exact programme may ask for more — always check the school’s own page. Use IELTS Academic for university study.
| Level of study | Typical IELTS (overall) |
|---|---|
| Undergraduate (bachelor’s) | 6.0 – 6.5 |
| Graduate (master’s / PhD) | 6.5 – 7.0 |
| Highly selective universities | 7.0 – 7.5 |

| University | Minimum IELTS | Level |
|---|---|---|
| University of Washington | 6.0 overall | First-year undergraduate |
| UC Berkeley | 6.5 overall | Undergraduate |
How studying in the US actually works
The steps run in a clear order. First you apply to a school that is approved by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP). If you are accepted, the school issues you a Form I-20. You then pay the SEVIS fee, complete the DS-160 visa form, and attend an interview at a US embassy or consulate to get your F-1 visa.
Your English level matters at the admission stage, not as a separate visa score. When the school admits you, it confirms on your I-20 that you meet its English requirement (or that you will complete English training). That is why the IELTS score you should focus on is the one your chosen university asks for.
So what IELTS score do you really need?
Look up your specific university and programme — that number is the one that counts. As a rough guide, many bachelor’s programmes ask for around 6.0 to 6.5 overall, master’s and PhD programmes often want 6.5 to 7.0, and the most competitive universities can ask for 7.0 to 7.5.
Two things to watch. First, individual departments often set a higher bar than the university-wide minimum, so check the programme page, not just the general admissions page. Second, use IELTS Academic — that is the version built for university study, and IELTS is accepted by more than 3,400 institutions across the USA.
If your score is below the minimum
You still have options. Many US schools offer pathway programmes or Intensive English Programs (IEPs) — these let you start with English study and then move into your degree once your level is high enough. SEVP recognises these routes and the school issues an I-20 for the English programme you are admitted to.
One important detail: a school cannot issue an I-20 based on a vague “conditional” promise alone — you have to be genuinely admitted to a real programme (the degree, or a pathway/IEP). And not every university offers this; some, like the University of Washington, require you to meet the English minimum up front. So if your score is short, look specifically for schools with a pathway or IEP option.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need IELTS for a US student visa?
Not from the government — the F-1 visa has no fixed IELTS or TOEFL minimum. You need whatever English score your university asks for as part of admission, which is then noted on your Form I-20.
What IELTS score do US universities usually require?
It varies by school and programme. As a guide, bachelor’s programmes often want about 6.0–6.5 overall, master’s and PhD programmes about 6.5–7.0, and the most selective universities 7.0–7.5. For example, the University of Washington lists 6.0 and UC Berkeley 6.5 for undergraduates.
Should I take IELTS Academic or General Training for the USA?
Take IELTS Academic. It is the version designed for university study and is the one US institutions use for admission.
What if my IELTS score is below the requirement?
Many US universities offer pathway programmes or Intensive English Programs that let you build your English first and then start your degree. Not every school offers this, so look for ones that do if your score is short of the minimum.
Is IELTS accepted in the United States?
Yes. IELTS reports that more than 3,400 institutions in the USA accept it, including for undergraduate and graduate admission.
