How to Manage Your Time in the IELTS Exam

Updated 3 November 2025 · 2 min read · ieltspractice.app

Plan your time before you start. In Writing, spend about 20 minutes on Task 1 and 40 on Task 2. In Reading, give each passage roughly 20 minutes. If time is short, write something for every question and never leave a blank.

Listening: 4 parts, heard once

Listening has four parts and 40 questions. You hear the audio only once, so you cannot replay it.

Read the questions in the short gaps before each part. If you miss an answer, let it go and focus on the next one, or you may miss more.

Reading: 60 minutes, 3 passages

Reading gives you 60 minutes for three passages and 40 questions. A good plan is about 20 minutes per passage.

There is no extra transfer time, so write your answers on the answer sheet as you go. Do not save them all for the end.

Writing: split your 60 minutes

Writing has two tasks in 60 minutes. Task 2 is worth more marks, so give it more time.

Spend about 20 minutes on Task 1, which is around 150 words, and about 40 minutes on Task 2, which is around 250 words. Leave a minute to check each one.

Speaking: stay relaxed about time

Speaking lasts about 11 to 14 minutes across three parts, and the examiner controls the timing.

You do not need to watch a clock. Just answer fully and let the examiner move you on when it is time.

What to do if you run out of time

Never leave a blank in Listening or Reading. There is no penalty for a wrong answer, so always guess.

In Writing, if time is nearly up, finish your idea in a short sentence and write a quick conclusion. A complete answer scores better than a half-finished one.
