Computer vs Paper IELTS
Updated 2 July 2026 · 2 min read · ieltspractice.app
You can take IELTS on a computer or on paper. The test content and scoring are exactly the same, so your band does not depend on the format. What changes is the test-day experience. This guide compares the two so you can pick the one that feels more comfortable for you.
The content is the same
Both formats test the same four skills with the same types of questions and the same marking. Your band is not affected by which one you choose.
The Speaking test is a face-to-face conversation with an examiner in both formats. Only the Listening, Reading and Writing parts differ in how you take them.
Typing versus handwriting
On computer, you type your Writing answers, which makes editing and word counts easy. On paper, you write by hand.
If you type quickly and are used to screens, the computer may suit you. If your handwriting is fast and clear, paper may feel more natural.
Results speed
Computer results usually arrive much faster, often within a few days. Paper results typically take around thirteen days.
If you need your score quickly for an application deadline, the computer format can be a real advantage.
Small differences on test day
On computer, the Listening section gives a short time to check answers, and there is no separate transfer time. On paper, you get extra minutes to copy Listening answers onto the answer sheet.
The computer screen shows a timer and lets you highlight text and make notes on screen. On paper, you can write freely on the question booklet.
How to choose
Pick the format that matches your habits. Comfortable with a keyboard and want fast results? Choose computer. Prefer writing by hand and reading on paper? Choose paper.
If you can, try a practice test in your chosen format first, so nothing on test day is a surprise.
